Call for Tasmanians interested in Arts and Disability.

With Arts "R" Access (Tasmania) and Arts Access (Victoria), Arts Access Australia will be holding a stakeholders meeting in Hobart in May. If you are an individual or an organisation interested in getting involved in arts practice in Tasmania please email info@dadaanat.net.au

Goodbye to AAA Director

Claire Havey, who has been AAA Director for the last 3 years, is leaving the Network. Thanks to all our members, friends and colleagues who have made the past 3 years such a time of change and development for the Network. Stay tuned to hear who our new Director will be.

Government News

Productivity Commission to review Disability Discrimination Act (DDA) Over the next 12 months the Productivity Commission is to review the operations of the 1992 (DDA) and the Disability Discrimination Regulations 1996. This is a public enquiry and all interested individuals and organisations can register their interest at www.pc.gov.au/inquiry/dda/index/html

Australia Council 2003 Handbook

7th Asia Pacific Wataboshi Music Festival - Director Appointed

Ludmila Doneman has been appointed Festival Director of the 7th Asia Pacific Wataboshi Music Festival. "Living the Dream" is a week long festival showcasing the experiences of artists with disabilities. From 16th to 23rd November 2003, at the Brisbane Powerhouse.

Australian and international artists from Bangkok, Thailand / Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam /Hong Kong, China / Jakarta, Indonesia / Johor Bahru, Malaysia / Manila, Philippines /Nara, Japan / Seoul, Korea / Singapore / Shanghai, China / Kaohsiung, Taiwan / Wellington, New Zealand will perform. The Art of Difference Festival, Melbourne

Art of Difference Festival highlights the community celebration of art & performance by people with a disability or people living with a mental illness. Held on Friday 23 & Saturday 24 May 2003 at Gasworks Arts Park, in Albert Park. The inaugural festival presented at Gasworks in 2001 was an outstanding success, winning the Department Of Human Services' Celebration Of Ability Art & Culture Award.

Tactile Art Exhibition 2003

Tactile Art is a biennial exhibition that forms the basis of an innovative collaboration between Object - Australian Centre for Craft and Design and Royal Blind Society, one of Australia's most important social service providers. The project aims to extend the parameters of contemporary art exhibitions, enabling audiences to experience art through their sense of touch. A major prize of $10,000 is offered, and the 8 - 10 finalists will receive a fee towards the cost of producing new work specifically for the exhibition. Transmutations Now Online

Last year NDAF commissioned the artist Jenny Meredith to create Transmutations, an interactive digital gallery for our website. This commission was supported by Transmutations is a virtual interactive collage with explicit reference to disability, consisting of ten designs, some of them incorporating lines of text. Supported by the Arts Council of England. The visual mouse controlled Flash version can be found at http://ndaf.org/transmutations. "Accessing the Arts" an Accessibility Resource Kit for Arts Organisations

This resource kit consists of series of pocket checklists across all areas of access from marketing to publications and exhibitions. Developed by Accessible Arts, and launched at the MCA by NSW Premier Bob Carr, this kit is useful for all arts managers. Go to www.dadaanat.net.au/accessingkit.htm

Report into Access and US Cultural Infrastructure Released

The report, 'Access and the Cultural Infrastructure', has been recently released by the US Centre for Arts and Culture. It looks at how people experience the arts and examines some of the barriers, which impede participation in the arts. www.culturalpolicy.org/pdf/access.pdf

Australian Social Policy Conference 2003 - SOCIAL INCLUSION - Call for Papers

The SPRC invites offers of papers from researchers, teachers, students and practitioners of social policy. Papers can present the results of research, discuss conceptual approaches to contemporary social policy research, describe work in progress or raise issues for social policy debate. 9-11 July 2003, University of New South Wales NOTE Closing Date for Abstracts extended to 31 March 2003. Bulk Buying Insurance for Community Sector

NSW Council of Social Services (NCOSS) is establishing a bulk buying insurance scheme in response to the difficulties facing the community sector struggling with increased premiums and in many cases an inability to obtain cover. The Scheme is a result of funding received from NSW Treasury and is targeting government funded non-government organisations Register your interest on-line at www.ncoss.org.au/insurance

NSW Disability Council - Call for Nominations

The Disability Council of NSW is the official adviser to the NSW Government on issues affecting people with disabilities and their families. The Council is also the NSW Disability Advisory Body to the Commonwealth Government. The representation on Council includes people with disabilities, as well as family members and people with particular expertise in the area of disability.

Council Members are appointed for their individual experience and expertise and not as representatives of any particular interest group or organisation. Nominations close - Monday, 17th March 2003.
